Warren James is a fine purveyor of vintage and acoustic jazz, blues, skiffle, gospel, folk and New Orleans roots music of the 1920s, 30s, to the 1950s and is widely acknowledged as being one of the busiest and most entertaining banjo and guitar players on the music scene today.
With his flexible trio or quartet, The Lonesome Travellers, it has been known for him to venture into old-time New Orleans roots music, string band tunes and 1920s and 30s acoustic blues classics.
“Warren James performs the very sounds that made a gramophone sing 100 years ago.”
He has appeared on albums and tours for several highly regarded bands and theatre shows, including: The Jazzaholics, The Jake Leg Jug band, The Johnny Cash Songbook and The Lonnie Donegan Story whilst being featured on BBC Radio 2 for both the Ceris Matthews Blues Show and The Desmond Carrington Show “The Music Goes Round”.
Now, with almost 300 live appearances in 2026, he is undoubtedly one of the hardest workers on the music scene today.
“… Not many banjo players have taken the jazz and blues scene so warmly as Warren James has. He is an exceptionally talented banjo player and guitarist, a showman, a story teller, and a breath of vintage fresh air for the UK music scene… If 300 professional engagements per year, and being in demand to play with countless top bands doesn’t speaks for itself… then what will?”
“Entertainment… like it used to be”
Jazz, blues and roots musicians who have guested with Warren’s Lonesome Travellers include top named such as: Richard Bennett, Alex Clarke, Danny Blyth, Spats Langham, Jim Swinnerton, Malcolm Thorne, Richard Leach, Duncan Wilcox, Richard Exall, Phil Shotton, Paula Jackman, Mike “Magic” Henry, Hugh Crozier and other known and respected names.
